TRADITIONAL RECIPES OF ROMAN CARNIVAL

"Castagnole alla Romana"
You can cook this recipe in our tiny, lovely kitchen, equipped with all the appliances.
Le castagnole are sweets typical of Roman cuisine, a classic of Carnival in Rome with ancient origins.
The "Saturnali", in fact, were religious festivities of ancient Rome linked to the passage of the seasons and featuring entertainment public, orgiastic rites, sacrifices, dances and masks.

The tradition of the carnival was kept alive through the centuries, featuring the city life with dancing and entertainment that took place in the city places specifically dedicated.

Fro the Xthe to the mid-sixteenth century the carnival festivities took place in fact on Mount Testaccio, then, by order of Pope Paul II, the games were held in Via Lata, now Via del Corso, where they still take place.

The tradition of the kitchen dedicated the typical sweets of the Carnival is also very ancient: Castagnole Roman style, Bocconotti alla ricotta, and frappe.

Serves 6:

- 4 eggs

- 400 g of flour

- 50 g of sugar

- 100 g of butter

- 1 small glass of rum

- 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest

- 100 g of powdered sugar

- Frying oil q.s.

- 1 pinch of salt

- 1 pinch of cinnamon

In a bowl add flour, eggs, melted butter, lemon zest and salt. Knead the dough vigorously until it will not come to a certain consistency, then shape by hand many balls, the size has to be like a chestnut, which will fry in hot oil. Once ready put them to dry on paper towels, then sprinkle with powdered sugar mixed with cinnamon and serve them hot or cold, depending on your taste.

Jewels of Rome, the church of Sant'Ignazio (St. Ignatius).

The church of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Campo Marzio (Latin: S. Ignatii de Loyola in Campo Marzio) is a place of Catholic cult in Rome, Baroque style  between 1626 and 1650. 

The church was built in 1626 on the ancient Church of the Annunziata

and it's very famous for hits wonderful paintings .

The spaces are transformed so that the painted decoration gives the impression of the absence of the ceiling of the aisle and the architectural structures of the walls may be long over the wall, in the open sky. In this "open space" you can admire the "Glory of St. Ignatius", where the saint at the center of the scene receives a mystical light from God the Father through Christ.

To better appreciate the fresco must be observed carefully the geometry of the marbles on the floor, standing right in the middle of the nave, where they form a circle in the marble.

Referring again to the central area of the floor and continuing just forward to the altar, we find a second reference point in the marble, that also in this case indicates something to pay attention. At first glance, looking up is not seen nothing unusual: there are columns, the ceiling and the huge dome; But, moving a few steps to the right or left of the observation point, the dome seems to "bend", revealing that it is ... designed and painted on a canvas than 17 meters in diameter! Another work of Andrea Pozzo, of which only the perspective view from a precise point makes "real" observer the dome, or only to positions on the aforementioned marble disc dome seems real, while, moving elsewhere, it assumes a dimension "impossible", revealing the pretense (false dome)!

In the building are preserved the bodies of several saints of the Society of Jesus.

Following the great success of the exhibition "The origin of Still Life. Caravaggio and the Master of Hartford", the management of the Borghese Gallery has extended the exhibition until March 12, 2017.As a result of huge demand for reservation to visit the exhibition "The origin of Still Life. Caravaggio and the Master of Hartford", the Borghese Gallery Museum will carry out special openings extending visiting hours up to 22 on Fridays and Saturdays . 

The exhibition ends Sunday, February 19, do not miss this opportunity!!!

The Museum will be open on Friday and Saturday until 22 pm with last entrance at 20.30 pm.

The exhibition aims to examine the pictorial art dedicated to Italian still life at the end of '500, with particular focus on the XVII century Caravaggio works. Among the top paintings there is also the 'Basket of Fruit', provided directly by the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan and work that officially starts the the genre of still life as a unique protagonist disconnected from the human figure.

In addition to the paintings by Caravaggio, will also be exposed some paintings on canvas of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, as 'Pots of flowers and fruit on the table'.

 The figure of the Master of Hartford remains still full of mystery and even now discussing about his possible identity. In this regard The purpose is to investigate the background of the still life in Rome at the end of '500 and the development brought by Caravaggio few years later. In addition to the painting borrowed from the Milanese art gallery there are also 'the Sick Bacchus' and' the Boy with a Basket of Fruit ', famous paintings by Michelangelo Merisi that enrich the 40 paintings on display until February, including' Flask spagliata with flowers' attributed to the Master of the flask of Forlì.

A typical Roman recipe: " Tonnerelli cacio e pepe"

Ok, it's time for a typical Roman recipe:

TONNARELLI CACIO E PEPE!!!! (Cheese and pepper tonnarelli )

Fast and easy!

Ingredients for 4 people:

400 grams of tonnarelli

200 grams of grated pecorino romano

ground black pepper

extra virgin olive oil

salt

Preparation

First we cook tonnarelli in plenty of water to which you add a little salt and a little oil Ages because they do not stick.

While pasta is cooking let's grated the cheese into a bowl and than add the black pepper. We take some spoon of the pasta cooking water, just enough to mix cheese and pepper and transform it into a cream by mixing vigorously.

Drain  pasta underdone (al dente) and pour over it pepper cream cheese; now mix well and serve immediately hot.

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Sette anni dopo l'ultimo concerto e a trent'anni dal primo: tornano gli U2 a Roma. Le date ci sono già: 15 e 16 luglio allo stadio Olimpico. THE OBELISKS in Rome

Rome contains the most obelisks in the world!

The Egyptian obelisks were brought here during the period of Emperor Augustus, when Egypt was under Roman rule. During the time of the Pharaohs obelisks were considered symbols of the sun and placed in front of the entrances to temples, adorned with commemorative engravings. 

While for Rome, the gigantic basalt steles have symbolic meaning as the spoils of war and evidence of imperial strength.

The obelisks made by the Romans were constructed during the period of Domitian in imitation of the Egyptian versions.

Prone to collapsing and being covered over, they were discovered during excavations and given new sites chosen for their strategic locations in the city, to highlight the new urban layout.

Piazza S. Pietro

The Vatican Obelisk awaits us as we head towards the Tiber and St Peter’s Square. Of Egyptian origin, this 25.5m high obelisk reaches to 40m with its pedestal and cross. It has not been engraved with any hieroglyphics, and is the only obelisk that has never collapsed. Brought to Rome by Caligula in 37 BC to embellish the Circus of Nero, it originally stood in the sacristy area of the current basilica. It was raised in the centre of the square in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V.

Piazza Navona

In the centre of Piazza Navona is the Agonalis Obelisk. Dating from the period of Emperor Domitian, it is 16.53m high and was initially located in his villa in Albano. In 311, Maxentius wanted it for his villa on the Appian Way, and it was only in 1651 under Pope Innocent X that Bernini added the obelisk to his Fountain of the Four Rivers (‘Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi’) in Piazza Navona.

Piazza della Rotonda

 Only a few hundred metres away is Piazza della Rotonda and the Pantheon, in front of which is an Egyptian obelisk that measures 6.34m in height, and 14.52m with its cross and pedestal. Emperor Domitian brought the obelisk to Rome to adorn the temple dedicated to Isis and Serapis in Campus Martius. It was rediscovered in 1373 and Pope Clement XI moved it to its current position on the fountain by Giacomo della Porta in 1711.

Piazza della Minerva

Behind the Pantheon in Piazza della Minerva, you will find the smallest Egyptian obelisk at just 5.47m in height, reaching little over 12m with the pedestal, little elephant and cross. The monument dates back to the 6th century BC. Following the request by Pope Alexander VII in 1667, it was erected in front of the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, at whose monastery it had been discovered. Gian Lorenzo Bernini was in charge of installing the obelisk, for which he designed a small elephant to carry it.

Considered by most people as the best coffee in Rome you will ever taste! This coffee is the result of a strictly secret mix.

The room is not very big and when the weather is good there are a few tables outside.

If you are in doubt about which coffee taste, do not hesitate and ask for a "Great Coffee"; remember that it will be served already sweetened, so if you do not want to, remember to the barman not to put sugar.

2. LA TAZZA D'ORO

Close to the Pantheon this bar is always full of people at every minute of the day.

I strongly suggest to try at least once the famous iced coffee with double cream on top and bottom!

Definitely not for those who are on a diet....

3 CASTRONI

Get into a Castroni store is like walking directly into an explosion of colors and scents of the past. The aroma of coffee is ,of course, the king. Castroni is perhaps the most popular grocery store in Rome, open since 1932. Must try the coffee cup to the bench: sublime and balanced.

For a gift for yourself or for others certainly you never go wrong by choosing a grounded coffee or coffee beans: you'll bring home all the intense fragrance experienced in the store.

4 Antico Caffè Greco

This is the historical place of the capital, and it certainly deserves that you take a coffee at least once in your life if you pass or if you live in Rome.

The restaurant inside is very refined and elegant, and you can breathe the history that this place has passed between politics, social life and art. I recommend, if you don't want to spend a fortune, have a coffee just at the counter of the bar.
