Gianlorenzo Bernini and Saint Angel Bridge

The last great enterprise of Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the design, commissioned by Pope Clement IX Rospigliosi, the theory of the Angels with the symbols of the Passion, on the bridge Sant'Angelo; make up as a "process" of repentance, according to a neo-medieval  mystic concept appeared along the streets of the great pilgrimages - like the" stations of the Cross "- here it is solved in the spectacle of a transcendental vision.

Bernini sculpted the figures of the Angel holding the crown of thorns and the Angel bearing the cartouche INRI (1668-71) which, considered by the Pope too good to be exposed to the elements, were placed elsewhere (as stated below) . The sculptor remade this two statues , then, with the help of its assistants;  these are still exposed to Ponte S. Angelo in place of the original. (From Artedossier n. 57 Bernini)
